Catholic Board welcomes new Student Trustee to the table

BRANTFORD, Ontario – Congratulations to Halaena Buenviaje, a grade 11 student at St. John’s College (Brantford), who will serve as Student Trustee on the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board for the 2022-2023 school year.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to welcome Miss Buenviaje to the role of Student Trustee,” said Chair Rick Petrella. “Student voice is essential in the workings of a school district, and I am looking forward to our time with her as she shares the opinions, concerns, and achievements of our students.”

Director Mike McDonald is “pleased to welcome Halaena to the role of Student Trustee where she will have the opportunity to develop her leadership skills and connect with other Student Trustees from across the province.”

“Halaena is a strong advocate for equity, social justice and will work diligently to serve and represent all students in the BHNCDSB. We are excited to work and learn along side Halaena next year,” said Robert De Rubeis, Superintendent of Education.

From the desk of Student Trustee Halaena Buenviaje

“I am a proud student from St. Johns College, and I am deeply honored to be elected the position of Student Trustee. To be given the role of being the voice for the student body is a role that I will not take lightly. I promise that I will put everything into ensuring that every student feels heard. I’m looking forward to working alongside amazing students who are part of the Student Senate.

I have been involved in Student Council from Grades 7 to 12 holding various roles such as President, Social Convener, Junior Chaplain, and Student Senator. In grade 8 I was awarded the Headmaster Award and Highest Female Academic Standing Award for my work. I am currently part of a phenomenal social justice group called ACE (Advocacy, Commitment, Empowerment) and have helped in the development of events such as Cultural Heritage Day.

As Student Trustee for BHNCDSB, I pledge to be diligent in my work, share the voice of our student body, and make people smile.”

Halaena’s term begins on September 1, 2022.
